US-based engineering group Bechtel has been chosen to manage the construction of three new passenger terminals at Riyadh’s primary airport, in a move that reflects Saudi Arabia’s growing ambitions in aviation and infrastructure development.
The project forms part of a broader national programme focused on expanding transport capacity and establishing the kingdom as a key transit point between continents. When complete, the expanded airport is expected to serve up to 185 million passengers annually and process more than 3.5 million tonnes of cargo — placing it among the busiest aviation hubs globally.
The new terminals will feature separate facilities for full-service airlines, low-cost carriers, and private jets, and will replace existing structures currently in operation. Authorities say the expansion is essential to meet future travel demand and to support the country’s wider economic diversification plans.
Sustainability is expected to be a core element of the construction strategy. The airport will incorporate energy-saving technologies and adhere to internationally recognised green building standards, with plans to secure a high-level environmental certification.
